The result of the Premier League’s big match this weekend will be a talking point whatever the final score: Manchester United (6th, 14 points) needs to take all three points at home against Liverpool (2nd, 18 points), or else risk watching the top three teams get away from them not even a third into the season. Liverpool is concerned with continuing its red-hot start and not losing ground to leaders Chelsea.
The clash of titans at Old Trafford will close out the Premier League weekend on Sunday. The other matchups earlier that same day should be tasty appetizers because they feature head-to-head matchups between teams that are still within reach of a top-four finish. West Ham (7th, 14 points) can overtake Tottenham (5th, 15 points) in the standings if the Hammers can win the latest London derby. Meanwhile, the winner of the match between Brentford (10th, 12 points) and Leicester City (12th, 11 points) will keep dreaming of a Champions League berth.
It could prove a good weekend for league-leading Chelsea (1st, 19 points) to extend its lead atop the table. The Blues will be banking on all three points against last-place Norwich City (20th, 2 points). Saturday’s marquee match at 12:30 p.m. ET will see third against fourth as Brighton (4th, 15 points) gets a chance to show whether it’s top-four material when the Seagulls host Manchester City (3rd, 17 points).

Arsenal’s home win kicked off the Matchday 9 slate on Friday. Goals by Thomas Partey, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Emile Smith Rowe gave the Gunners a strong 3-1 win over listless Aston Villa (13th, 10 points) which now finds itself in midtable. Arsenal (9th, 14 points) has recovered well from those three straight losses to start the season.
