The SAT officially marked its 100th anniversary this summer, signaling a century of influence over the American educational landscape. Since its inception in 1926, the exam has evolved from a niche experimental tool into a nearly universal rite of passage for millions of high school students seeking entry into higher education. Throughout this centennial journey, Harvard University has remained a central protagonist, first as a primary architect of the test’s adoption and more recently as a vocal defender of its utility in a modern, increasingly complex admissions environment.

The story of the SAT is inextricably linked with the history of the College Board, a nonprofit organization established in 1899 with the explicit goal of standardizing the chaotic college admissions processes of the late 19th century. Charles W. Eliot, then the president of Harvard, served as a founding member of the board, driven by a vision of a unified system that could evaluate students from disparate backgrounds under a single set of criteria. For its first 25 years, the organization focused on subject-specific examinations, but the landscape shifted dramatically in the mid-1920s toward the measurement of cognitive potential.

The Genesis of the Scholastic Aptitude Test

On June 23, 1926, the first iteration of what was then called the Scholastic Aptitude Test was administered to 8,040 candidates. This inaugural exam was a 97-minute marathon consisting of 315 questions divided into nine sub-tests. These sections covered a wide array of mental exercises, including logic, analogies, and reading comprehension, alongside mathematical components. Unlike the subject-based tests that preceded it, the 1926 SAT was designed to measure "innate ability" rather than specific classroom knowledge—a concept that would spark decades of pedagogical debate.

The test’s elevation to its status as the gold standard of American admissions occurred during the 1940s, but the groundwork was laid in the 1930s by James Bryant Conant, Harvard’s president from 1933 to 1953. Conant, alongside assistant dean and scholarship director Henry Chauncey, sought a way to identify high-potential students who resided outside the traditional feeder networks of elite New England preparatory schools. In 1934, Chauncey successfully pitched the SAT to Conant as a mechanism to identify "diamonds in the rough"—gifted students from public schools across the United States who lacked the social capital of the elite but possessed the intellectual rigor required for Harvard.

The SAT has undergone several major redesigns to keep pace with changing educational theories and social pressures. Andrew Ho, the Charles William Eliot Professor of Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a prominent psychometrician, notes that the test’s history is a transition from "puzzles to practice."

One of the most significant technical adjustments occurred in 1995 with the "recentering" of scores. Over the decades, the average score on the 200–800 scale had gradually drifted downward. To make scores more reflective of contemporary student averages and to ensure a score of 500 represented the true midpoint of the testing population, the College Board recalibrated the scale. The focus shifted toward evidence-based reading and writing and math that emphasized data analysis and algebra, moving the test away from its "aptitude" roots and toward a "college and career readiness" model.

Today, the test has entered the digital age. In 2024, the College Board transitioned to a fully digital, adaptive format. This new version is shorter, lasting roughly two hours instead of three, and adjusts the difficulty of questions based on a student’s performance in earlier sections. This evolution reflects a century-long effort to balance efficiency with accuracy.

Data Insights and the Socioeconomic Divide

Despite its intended role as a meritocratic leveler, the SAT has long been a lightning rod for criticism regarding racial and socioeconomic equity. Critics argue that the test measures a family’s wealth more accurately than a student’s potential. Data from Opportunity Insights, a Harvard-based research group, has provided empirical weight to these concerns.

According to research led by economist Raj Chetty, children from families in the top 1 percent of the income distribution are 13 times more likely to score a 1300 or higher on the SAT or ACT than students from low-income families. Furthermore, College Board data consistently shows a correlation between parental education levels and student performance. This "wealth gap" in testing has fueled a multi-billion-dollar test-preparation industry, which critics claim undermines the exam’s claim of being an objective measure of ability.

However, the debate is not one-sided. Proponents of the SAT, including many modern admissions officers, argue that the test remains one of the few ways to identify high-achieving students in under-resourced schools where grade inflation may be rampant or where extracurricular opportunities are scarce.

The Pandemic Pivot and the Return to Requirements

The COVID-19 pandemic forced a massive experiment in "test-optional" admissions. With testing centers closed, hundreds of institutions, including Harvard, suspended testing requirements. For several years, it appeared that the SAT might be fading into obsolescence.

However, in early 2024, Harvard joined a growing number of Ivy League and elite institutions—including Yale, Brown, and Dartmouth—in announcing a return to required standardized testing. The university’s decision was informed by internal data and research from Opportunity Insights, which suggested that test scores are a better predictor of college success than high school Grade Point Averages (GPAs) alone.

"The data reveal that other measures—recommendation letters, extracurriculars, essays—are even more prone to such biases," said Raj Chetty, the William A. Ackman Professor of Public Economics. "Considering standardized test scores is likely to make the admissions process at Harvard more meritocratic while increasing socioeconomic diversity."

Administrators argued that without a standardized metric, admissions officers were forced to rely more heavily on subjective criteria that often favor wealthy students who have access to private essay coaches and expensive "pay-to-play" extracurricular activities.

The Five-Legged Stool of Admissions

Andrew Ho describes the modern admissions process as a "five-legged stool," consisting of GPA, extracurricular activities, essays, recommendation letters, and standardized test scores. Ho cautions that removing the "testing leg" does not necessarily make the stool more stable or fair.

"If you take a leg of the five-legged stool away, it rests on these four other legs, and we should look at those four other legs critically," Ho explained. He noted that the ability to secure glowing letters of recommendation or participate in high-level extracurriculars is often just as restricted by class and race as test scores are. By including the SAT, admissions offices have a standardized data point that can help contextualize a student’s achievements within the limitations of their environment.

Ho emphasizes that the SAT should be viewed as a "reflection of educational opportunity at a given point in time" rather than an immutable measure of a person’s worth. He advocates for institutions to be more transparent about how these scores are used—not as a cutoff, but as one piece of a holistic puzzle.

Implications for the Next Century

As the SAT enters its second century, its role remains as controversial as it is consequential. The move toward digital, adaptive testing suggests the College Board is committed to using technology to make the exam more accessible and less burdensome. Meanwhile, the ongoing research into "adversity scores" and socioeconomic context indicates that the conversation around equity is far from over.

The SAT’s survival for 100 years is a testament to the persistent desire for a universal standard in a fractured educational system. While the test has changed its name, its format, and its underlying philosophy, its core purpose remains rooted in the 1926 ambition to create a common language for academic potential.

For the 2 million students who take the exam annually, the SAT remains a high-stakes challenge. For the institutions that require it, it remains a vital, if imperfect, tool. As Professor Ho concludes, the most important takeaway from the centennial is the recognition that no single test can capture the full breadth of human capability. The SAT’s legacy is not that it provides all the answers, but that it continues to force the American education system to ask difficult questions about merit, access, and the definition of success.
